Actaeon provides professional plant installation services — including trees, shrubs, perennials, groundcover, and seasonal color — for residential and commercial properties in Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia.
The right plant in the right place is the most underrated rule in landscaping. Wrong plant selection leads to constant maintenance, pest pressure, and replacement — we start by matching species to site conditions.
How we select plants for DMV sites
We assess four variables before specifying any plant material: sun exposure, soil type, drainage, and maintenance tolerance. Maryland clay drains poorly and compacts easily; a plant specified for well-drained loam in a nursery catalog may struggle here without amendment. DC microclimates add another layer — urban heat islands, reflected heat from masonry and pavement, and limited root zones all require species selection that accounts for site stress, not just ornamental value.
We source from regional nurseries whose stock has been grown in Mid-Atlantic conditions. Nursery stock grown in different climates can exhibit delayed failure — looking fine for a year before stress catches up.
What types of plant material we install
- Shade and ornamental trees. Canopy trees for long-term value, ornamental trees for seasonal interest — cherry, dogwood, serviceberry, redbud.
- Evergreen and deciduous shrubs. Foundation plantings, screening, and mixed borders. We recommend species with a mature size that fits the space rather than ones that require constant shearing.
- Native perennials. Black-eyed Susan, coneflower, cardinal flower, and native ferns — low maintenance, high ecological value, and reliable performance in DMV conditions.
- Groundcovers. Pachysandra, liriope, vinca, and native alternatives — functional under canopy trees and on slopes where turf won't establish.
- Seasonal annuals and color. For commercial properties that want year-round color programming.
